Leveraging the power of Qusp's NeuroScale cloud platform, eQobeats is a mobile app that dynamically adjusts the tempo of a piece of music to match the user's heart rate. This task is completed in four steps:
Sensor data processed by NeuroScale
Heart rate, heart rate variability and target playback speed sent to eQobeats
Time-warping of audio
Audio playback
How Did We Do It?
eQobeats was completed over two quarters as part of the University of California, San Diego's Bioengineering Senior Design Project. To plan, coordinate and ensure timely completion of the application, a Gantt chart was drafted and updated throughout the course of the project.
Does It Work?
Short answer: YES! With a Pearson correlation coefficient >0.99, our testing shows that music playback speed is highly correlated to the user's heart rate. Further, the processing latency was below the maximum tolerable for entrainment. Taken together, you can be confident the speed of the music reflects that of your heart.
